The first is a related adoptions which occurs when either or both of the adopting parents has a relationship to the child desired to be adopted by blood or marriage. For example, if a step parent wishes to adopt his or her spouse’s child or children, the laws regarding related adoptions will apply. If the adopting parent or parents are not related to the child desired to be adopted, then there are additional requirements necessary under the Illinois Adoption Act order to finalize the process. Sometimes the birth parent or parents agree with the adoption which simplifies the process. If the birth parent or parents contest the adoption, this adversarial process requires experiences counsel at these sensitive issues.
